The other day while I was at my in laws, my "other Mother" was complaining about how awful her potholders looked. A little while back, my husband bought me a sewing machine and I have been anxious to start taking on little projects to try and get comfortable with the machine. This is such an easy project and it takes very little time. Also, it is a great way to use up extra fabrics you have laying around. I think it would be adorable to attach one of your potholders to one of those mason jar brownie containers for a cute homemade Christmas gift---better start making them now. Christmas will be here before you know it.
4: 8x8 inch squares
2: 8x8 inch squares of contrasting color
2: 8x8 inch felt squares (any color-they won't be seen)
pencil
scissors
iron
ironing board
sewing machine
thread
Cut squares. Iron so there aren't any creases in fabric.
Iron 2 squares of each colored fabric in half.
Layer fabric in this pattern.
1. Grab one of the 4 squares that was not folded in half. Turn it right side down.
2. Next, layer 2 pieces of felt.
3. Grab another piece of of the unfolded fabric and layer right side up on top of the felt.
Layer remaining folded pieces, ironed seam towards the middle.
On the last piece, lift up other fabric and tuck under to make them layered squares.
Pin in place.
Sew along edge. It does not have to be perfect because you will not see your seam. Try and keep it even though so when you turn it inside out it will look neat.
After sewing the edges, turn your potholder right side out. After you turn it, take a pencil and use the eraser end to push the corners out. I also sewed a line to hold down the flaps but you don't have to. It works either way.
